Wrangler a little over a year ago and my rear gate isn t locking unlocking with my remote key.

But some vehicles may not have a visible keyhole.

You did not mention whether the door button to lock the doors worked or not.
If you close and open your car door with the smart fob this key is likely to be hidden inside the fob.

I replaced the battery but that don t fix the issue.
There should be a release button or catch in the remote pressing which will pop out the spare key.
